He was born on May 18, 1957 in the city of Kirov into the family of a worker. He was baptized in honor of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky. From 1963 to 1974 he studied at secondary school No. 14 in Kirov. Kirov.
From 1975 to 1977 he completed a full course of study at the Leningrad Theological Seminary.
From 1977 to 1980 he studied at the Leningrad Theological Academy.
In 1979 he was sent to Kirov, where he was personal secretary to Bishop Khrisanf (Chepil) of Kirov and Slobodsk until 1983.
In 1990 he graduated from the Moscow Theological Academy with the degree of Candidate of Theology. The subject of his thesis was "The Holy Martyr Nicodemus, Archbishop of Kostroma and Galich (1868-1938)".
On August 1, 1983 he was ordained deacon, the next day - priest by Bishop of Kirov and Slobodsk Khrisanf (Chepil) (Metropolitan of Vyatka and Slobodsk † 04.01.2011).
In 1985 he was elevated to the rank of archpriest.
In December 1983 he was appointed clergyman, and in November 1987 he was appointed rector of the Seraphim Cathedral in Kirov.
From 1986 to 1989 he was secretary of the Kirov Diocesan Administration.
On September 13, 1989, His Holiness Patriarch Pimen of Moscow and All Russia and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church elected Bishop of Kostroma and Galich (Journal of the meeting of the Holy Synod No. 80).
On September 21, 1989 he was tonsured into monasticism with the name Alexander in honor of the Monk Alexander of Svir, and on September 24 he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite.
On September 27, 1989, he was ordained Bishop of Kostroma and Galich in the Epiphany Cathedral (Elokhovsky Cathedral) in Moscow by the host of archpastors of the Russian Orthodox Church, headed by Metropolitan Vladimir (Sabodan) of Rostov and Novocherkassk, Administrator of the Moscow Patriarchate (now His Beatitude Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine).
In 1990 he was a deputy of the Kostroma Regional Council of People's Deputies.
On January 25, 1991 at the I Congress of Orthodox Youth he was elected Chairman of the All-Church Orthodox Youth Movement of the Moscow Patriarchate. In April 1992, he was elected by the Council of Bishops as Chairman of the Commission for the Study of the Activities of Special Services in the Church.
In 2000 - 2010. - In 2000 - 2010 he was Chairman of the Synodal Department for Youth Affairs.
In 1994 - 2000. - Member of the Council for Youth Affairs under the President of the Russian Federation (Order of the President of the Russian Federation No. 557-rp of 11.11.1994).
On February 25, 1994, His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia elevated him to the rank of archbishop.
On March 5, 2010, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church appointed Archbishop of Astana and Almaty (Journal of the Synod No. 5 of March 5, 2010).
By decision of the Holy Synod of July 26, 2010 (Journal # 68) the head of the Metropolitan District in the Republic of Kazakhstan is to be called Metropolitan of Astana and Kazakhstan.
On July 28, 2010 at the Divine Liturgy in Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill elevated to the rank of Metropolitan.
On October 20, 2010 was elected to the Council of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan.
On July 26, 2011 he was appointed to the Commission on Human Rights under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Presidential Decree № 128).
On October 5, 2011 by decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church (Journal No. 99) he was introduced into the permanent members of the Holy Synod.
