Bishop of Kaskelen, Vicar of the Astana Diocese
Born on March 10, 1967, in Leningrad in a family of military personnel.
From 1974 to 1984, he studied at secondary school No. 139 in Leningrad with an advanced study of mathematics.
From 1984 to 1986, he studied at the Moscow Institute of Cryptography, Communications, and Informatics.
From March to December 1986, he served in the ranks of the Soviet Army.
From December 1986 to July 1987, he was a psalmist at the Cosmo-Damian Church in the city of Kirsanov, Tambov Diocese.
In 1987, he entered the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary, which he graduated from in 1990 with honors.
From 1988 to 1990, he served as a psalmist at the Nikolskaya Church in the village of Sablino, Tosno district, St. Petersburg Diocese.
In 1990, he entered the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, which he graduated from in 1994.
On September 21, 1990, he was ordained as a deacon by Metropolitan Ioann (Snychev) of St. Petersburg and Ladoga.
On November 18, 1990, he was ordained as a presbyter by Archbishop Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad (now His Holiness the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia).
From 1990 to 1992, he served as a priest at the Transfiguration Cathedral in St. Petersburg.
From 1992 to 1994, he served as a priest at the Mikhailovsky Cathedral in the city of Lomonosov, St. Petersburg Diocese.
Upon graduation from the Theological Academy in September 1994, he was accepted into the clergy of the Kostroma Diocese.
On January 1, 1995, he was tonsured as a monk with the name Gennady, in honor of Venerable Gennady of Kostroma, by Archbishop Alexander (Mogilev) of Kostroma and Galich.
From 1995 to 1996, he served as the rector of the Kostroma Theological School.
From 1995 to 2010, he was the rector of the St. Alexey Church in Kostroma.
From 1995 to 2010, he was the chairman of the diocesan commission for the canonization of saints of the Kostroma Diocese.
In 1996, he was elevated to the rank of hegumen.
Since 1996, he has participated in various projects in the field of Orthodox youth ministry conducted under the auspices of the All-Church Orthodox Youth Movement, later known as the Synodal Department for Youth Affairs.
In 1995, at the XV General Assembly of the World Fellowship of Orthodox Youth "Syndesmos," he was elected to the Executive Committee as a representative of the Eastern European region.
From 1996 to 2010, he served as the rector of the revived Kostroma Theological Seminary. He taught the history of the Russian Orthodox Church, general church history, and pastoral theology at the seminary.
On September 1, 1998, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite.
In 2000, he was appointed deputy chairman of the Synodal Department for Youth Affairs.
Since April 2010, he has been a cleric of the Astana and Almaty Diocese, serving as the rector of the Ascension Cathedral.
By the decision of the Holy Synod on May 31, 2010, he was elected vicar of the Astana Diocese with the title of Bishop of Kaskelen (Journal No. 43).
By the decision of the Holy Synod on July 26, 2010, he was appointed rector of the Almaty Theological Seminary (Journal No. 79).
On October 7, 2010, on the eve of the commemoration of St. Sergius of Radonezh, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia performed the rite of nomination of Archimandrite Gennady as Bishop of Kaskelen, vicar of the Astana Diocese, at the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra.
On October 10, 2010, on the 20th Sunday after Pentecost, during the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Orekhovo-Zuevo, Moscow Region, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, together with a host of archpastors, consecrated Archimandrite Gennady as Bishop of Kaskelen, vicar of the Astana Diocese.
By the decision of the Synod of the Metropolia of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan on December 15, 2012 (Journal No. 66), it was resolved, in connection with the state re-registration of the Republican Religious Association "Metropolia of the Russian Orthodox Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan" (Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan), to change the position title "Chancellor of the Synod of the Metropolia" to "Chancellor of the Metropolia," in accordance with clause 5.4 of the Civil Charter of the Metropolia.
