January 18-19, 2025. Astana. The Dean of the Astana Parishes, Archimandrite Sergiy (Karamyshev), led the Epiphany celebrations in the parishes of the Astana Church District.
On the Eve of Theophany, Archimandrite Sergiy officiated at the All-Night Vigil in the Dormition Cathedral.
After the service, a cross procession took place from the Constantine and Helen Cathedral to the Ishim River for the blessing of water in the Jordan (a specially prepared ice hole for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord).
The sacred procession, led by Archimandrite Sergiy, included clergy from the capital, parishioners of city churches, and residents of Astana.
At the prepared ice hole, the pastor performed prayers for the sanctification of the waters, after which he immersed the Holy Cross in the water three times while singing the troparion of the feast. The clergy then sprinkled the participants of the service with the sanctified water.
Following the blessing, the Jordan on the Ishim River was opened for baptismal bathing, allowing numerous faithful to immerse themselves.
The city administration of Astana and the capital’s Department of Internal Affairs assisted in organizing the cross procession and the traditional baptismal immersions. Tens of thousands of people participated in the Epiphany bathing in Astana.
On the day of the Great Feast itself, January 19, Archimandrite Sergiy celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the Dormition Cathedral. He was joined by the clergy of Kazakhstan’s main cathedral.
The choir of the Dormition Cathedral, under the direction of O. Varentsova, sang during the service.
After the prayer behind the ambo, the clergy moved to the center of the cathedral to perform the Great Blessing of the Waters. The pastor sprinkled the faithful with the Great Agiasma, after which the troparion of the Feast of Theophany was sung in glorification.
At the conclusion of the Liturgy, Archimandrite Sergiy addressed the congregation with a sermon.
