The Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan Celebrated the First Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts in the Holy Forty Days (Great Lent)

March 5, 2025 – Wednesday of the First Week of Great Lent.

Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan celebrated the first Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts of Saint Gregory the Dialogist in the Ascension Cathedral of Almaty.

The choir of the Ascension Cathedral sang under the direction of E. Boguslavets. The hymn “Let My Prayer Be Set Forth” was performed by Deacon Alexander Piven, D. Kochua, and M. Ababakriev.

The homily following the Communion hymn was delivered by Priest Georgy Sidorov.

At the conclusion of the Liturgy, Metropolitan Alexander congratulated the clergy and faithful on the first Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts of the Holy Forty Days and addressed the congregation with an archpastoral exhortation.

“We know that eternal life is attained through love for God and love for our neighbor. However, the Lord Himself has revealed to us another great truth: it is divine nourishment—the Holy and Life-Giving Mysteries of Christ, the Most Pure Body and Blood of our Savior—that leads a person into the Kingdom of Heaven. Participation in the sacrament of Holy Communion is the source of virtue and an effective means of deliverance from sin. The Lord Jesus Christ proclaims to us: ‘Unless you eat the Flesh of the Son of Man and drink His Blood, you have no life in you’ (John 6:53).
It is impossible to merely observe from the outside and truly experience the gifts of divine grace, to receive that consolation and help from the Lord, which come to the faithful through the faithful observance of the fast, frequent attendance at the Church of God, and participation in the Mysteries. Personal spiritual experience cannot be replaced by any effort of reason, exertion of will, or intensity of feelings, for ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him’ (1 Cor. 2:9, cf. Isa. 64:4).
‘O taste and see that the Lord is good!’ (Psalm 34:8 LXX / Psalm 33:9 KJV) – with these words of the Psalmist David, the Church of Christ calls us to partake of true and authentic spiritual life.” From the sermon of Metropolitan Alexander.
