During the Week of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women, the Head of the Metropolis Celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the Sophia Cathedral in Almaty

On May 4, 2025 – the 3rd Sunday after Pascha; the commemoration of the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women and of the righteous Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus – secret disciples of Christ.

On this day, the Orthodox Church honors the women who were disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ – Mary Magdalene, Mary the wife of Cleophas, Salome, Joanna, Martha, Mary, and others, who followed Him during His earthly life and did not leave the place of His burial after His death. They were the first to be vouchsafed the joyful news of Christ’s Resurrection. This feast has long been considered the Orthodox Women’s Day – a celebration of all women.

Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan celebrated the Divine Liturgy with the Paschal rite at the Sophia Cathedral of the Iveron-Seraphim Convent in the city of Almaty.

Concelebrating with the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan were: Protopriest Evgeny Vorobyev, rector of the Almaty Church in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow”; Protopriest Evgeny Ivanov, acting rector of the Almaty Theological Seminary and head of the Information Department of the Metropolis; Protopriest Kirill Shklyar, sacristan of the Saints Peter and Paul Church in Almaty; Protopriest Alexander Zyryanov, dean of the Ili Church District; Hieromonk Alexy (Cherevtsov), rector of the Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos in the Akzhar microdistrict; Hieromonk Prokhor (Endovitsky), head of the Metropolitan’s personal secretariat; Priest Peter Bakhtiyarov, vice-rector for academic affairs of the Almaty Theological Seminary; Priest Georgy Sidorov, head of the administrative secretariat of the Head of the Metropolis; Priest Daniil Bobylev, head of the correspondence department of the Almaty Orthodox Theological Seminary; Protodeacon Nikolai Grinkevich; Protodeacon Roman Golovin, head of the Metropolitan’s protocol service; Protodeacon Vladimir Syrovatsky; Deacon Bogdan Boyko; Deacon Ilya Vorobyev; and Deacon Georgy Tkachenko.

The hymns of the Liturgy were performed by the choir of the Sophia Cathedral under the direction of O. Usoltseva.

Praying at the service were: Abbess Lyubov (Yakushkina), superior of the Iveron-Seraphim Convent of the Southern Capital, along with the sisters of the convent; staff of the Almaty Diocesan Administration; parishioners of the churches of the Southern Capital, and numerous pilgrims.

The sermon after the Communion verse was delivered by Priest Georgy Sidorov.

The Liturgy concluded with the glorification of the Radiant Resurrection of Christ, after which His Eminence the Metropolitan exclaimed “Christ is Risen!” in various languages – both ancient and modern.

Metropolitan Alexander then addressed the faithful with words of spiritual edification, after which he congratulated all women on the day commemorating the Holy Myrrh-Bearing Women and presented them with flowers.

“The joyful Paschal message is the unshakable foundation of our faith; as the holy Apostle Paul says, ‘If Christ is not risen, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is also in vain’ (1 Cor. 15:14). Today, on the feast of Christ’s Resurrection, the heart of every believer is filled with grace-filled joy: before us is visibly revealed the great mystery of our salvation, accomplished by the Incarnate Son of God; today each of us finds ‘peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ’ (Rom. 5:1). Celebrating Holy Pascha, we, as the Paschal canon proclaims, ‘celebrate the death of death, the destruction of hell, and the beginning of another eternal life.’ The first word of the Risen Lord, addressed to the myrrh-bearing women, was: ‘Rejoice!’ (Matt. 28:9), and His first greeting to the disciples – ‘Peace be unto you’ (Luke 24:36). Joy and peace were the gifts the Savior gave to His apostles, who bore the Good News of Christ’s Resurrection to the ends of the earth, becoming ‘eyewitnesses and ministers of the Word’ (Luke 1:2), and having fulfilled their earthly mission, continue to instruct believers through their God-inspired writings: the Kingdom of God is ‘righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit’ (Rom. 14:17). The building of such a Kingdom within one’s soul, the acquisition of the Holy Spirit – this is the chief aim of the Christian life; for this purpose, the Church, like a loving Mother, grants her children all that is needed, proclaims to our hearts the Gospel message, instructs us with the words of the holy fathers’ wisdom, and bestows grace-filled gifts in the Church’s Sacraments.
Today the Church calls us with the words of Saint Gregory the Theologian: ‘Christ is risen from the dead: rise with Him. Christ has come forth from the tomb: free yourselves from the chains of evil. A new creation is born in Christ: be renewed.’
The Holy Hieromartyr Irenaeus of Lyon says that the apostles placed everything necessary for us into the Church of Christ, like into a rich treasury, where this Divine inheritance is not only carefully preserved, but is also distributed to the faithful children of the Church for their salvation. This treasure is now entrusted to us, Orthodox Christians; we are obliged not only to guard it with great responsibility and love, but also to make these gifts of God’s mercy accessible to others – ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good!’ (Ps. 33:9).
We are all called by the Savior to the work of proclaiming the faith – especially now, when so many people are in urgent need of finding the true path of spiritual life. ‘How shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher?’ – the holy Apostle Paul warns, and concludes: ‘So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God’ (Rom. 10:14–17). Each of us, by the very name “Christian” that we bear, is obligated to bring the Gospel message to others, affirming the all-conquering power of Christ’s Truth and Righteousness through word and deed.” — From the homily of Metropolitan Alexander.
