October 21, 2024. Karaganda. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, a screening of the documentary film Service, which tells the story of the work of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan, took place at the Kinoplexx cinema.
The event was organized by the “Apostle” public foundation, led by President G.G. Sosnovsky, in collaboration with the Information Department of the Karaganda Diocese. Among those present at the screening were the dean of the Karaganda Church District, Protopriest Alexander Ugolkov, and the secretary of the diocesan administration, Protopriest Dmitry Patrikeyev, as well as representatives of the academic and artistic intelligentsia, art experts, and journalists. A total of 140 people attended the film screening.
The work on the film was carried out with the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, in partnership with the “Apostle” public foundation led by G.G. Sosnovsky. The film crew, which included specialists from both Kazakhstan and abroad, alongside the administration of the Almaty Theological Seminary and staff from the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District, worked throughout several months of 2023 in Astana, Almaty, Karaganda, and the Almaty, Akmola, and Karaganda regions.
The film highlights the spiritual, educational, social, charitable, and peacekeeping activities of the Orthodox Church in Kazakhstan. It delves into interfaith dialogue and the relationship between the Church, the state, and society. The documentary also touches on the subject of 20th-century political repressions, testifying to the Kazakh people’s assistance to innocent individuals exiled or imprisoned in labor camps within the Republic. Interviews with hierarchs, clergy, prominent public figures of Kazakhstan, and ordinary citizens are interspersed with scenes showcasing the country’s historical and cultural landmarks and breathtaking views of Kazakhstan’s natural landscapes.
The director of the film was the late renowned Russian documentary filmmaker Andrey Andreyev, who passed away on June 4, 2024. Andreyev was known for his authorial documentary films. Some of his notable works include The People’s Doctor, Children of God, The Patriarchal Choir, and the thematic series Pastors: Pastors, Pastors. Varese, Pastors. Sardinia, Pastors. Milan. His film Pastors, about the lives of Orthodox priests, monks, and laypeople in Italy, won the Premio Felix grand prize at the Milan Film Festival in the “Best Documentary Film” category in 2021.
Previously, the Service film was screened on October 16 in the city of Pavlodar, where viewers gave the documentary high praise.
