On November 1, 2024, in Almaty, with the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, the students of the Central Sunday School at the Nikolsky Cathedral visited the Church of Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Great Prince Vladimir in the Baganaschil district.
The group was led by the director of the Central Sunday School, G.V. Cherepanova, and the cleric of the Nikolsky Cathedral, Hierodeacon Athanasius (Kozel).
The students were welcomed by the cleric of the Vladimir Church, Priest Roman Kravchenko.
Father Roman introduced the guests to the history of the church’s construction, its unique architecture, distinctive murals, and the life of the parish. During the tour, Father Roman elaborated on the main shrine of the church—the ancient Tikhvin Icon of the Mother of God from the 18th century. The icon was gifted to the Orthodox faithful of the Metropolitan District in 2018 and is a “measure-for-measure” copy of the revealed 14th-century icon of the Most Holy Theotokos, created by the monk Aaron of the Tikhvin Dormition Monastery in 1706.
Those interested had the opportunity to ascend the church bell tower and familiarize themselves with the set of bells and the ringing system.
The students, together with the Sunday School students of the Vladimir Church, participated in a quiz dedicated to the life of Saint Alexander Nevsky.
All participants of the intellectual competition received sweet treats and memorable gifts such as books and calendars.
The event concluded with a joint tea gathering.
