October 8, 2024. Astana. The XXII meeting of the Secretariat of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions was held in the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation in the capital of Kazakhstan, chaired by the Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, M.S. Ashimbayev.
By the blessing of the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, the Administrator of the Metropolitan District of Kazakhstan, and Protopriest Dmitry Baydek, the Dean of the Assumption Cathedral, participated in the work of the Secretariat.
The participants of the meeting included religious leaders of world and traditional religions, representing Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Taoism, and Shintoism from Russia, Azerbaijan, the Vatican, the United Kingdom, Egypt, Israel, India, Iran, Qatar, China, Saudi Arabia, Mongolia, the UAE, Pakistan, Portugal, Korea, Thailand, Switzerland, and Japan. The conference also saw the participation of parliamentarians, representatives of government bodies, and public and religious organizations from Kazakhstan and other countries.
The attendees exchanged views on jointly addressing modern challenges, discussed the progress of the Concept for the Development of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions for 2023-2033, and outlined the agenda for the upcoming VIII Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.
During the speeches, the participants of the meeting emphasized the importance of consolidating the efforts of all religious and international organizations to preserve peace, strengthen dialogue, and promote a culture of mutual respect.
As a result of the meeting, Goodwill Ambassadors were elected, and a ceremony was held to award clergy representatives with honorary medals.
On October 9, under the auspices of the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, a forum of young religious leaders titled “Shaping a Common Future: The Role of Young Leaders in Strengthening Interreligious Dialogue” took place in the capital of Kazakhstan.
Participants representing more than 30 countries discussed ways to address the pressing issues of the modern world. During the panel sessions, topics centered on spiritual values in the era of new technologies, including the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. The role of young leaders in the sustainable development of peace was also a key focus of discussion.
Among the speakers was Protopriest Dmitry Baidek, keyholder of the Assumption Cathedral, who delivered a greeting on behalf of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan. He then spoke to the attendees about Christian principles of raising the younger generation, drawing on examples from the patristic tradition.
At the conclusion of the session, a joint statement from young religious leaders was adopted, outlining key directions for future efforts. As part of the event, there was also a presentation of the electronic library of religious materials from the Congresses of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions.
