The Astana-Pochaev Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos is a replica of the venerated miraculous Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God, a sacred treasure of the Russian Orthodox Church.
The Pochaev Icon of the Queen of Heaven is revered in all countries where Orthodox Christians reside. For about 400 years, the miraculous icon has been enshrined in the Dormition Pochaev Lavra, an ancient stronghold of Orthodoxy. Numerous miracles are performed through the prayers of believers before this holy icon.
A copy of the revealed Pochaev Icon was brought from Pochaev in the early 1960s by Archpriest Nikolai Ivanenko, rector of the Constantine and Helen Church in the city of Tselinograd (now Astana). In the early 1970s, the tradition of venerating the holy icon was continued by the eminent pastor and confessor of faith, Archimandrite Cyril (Borodin).
On June 4, 2011, at a meeting of the Synod of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan chaired by Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, it was established to celebrate the annual feast of the Astana Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos on July 6 according to the new style.
