Evstafy Vladimirovich Malakhovsky

(1880 - 1918) – Priest, Hieromartyr

Commemoration day on May 5 (April 22 O.S.) in the Assembly of New Martyrs and Confessors of the Russian Church.

Was born on March 29, 1880, into the family of a priest in the Polotsk Diocese.

In 1897, he graduated from Polotsk Theological School, and in 1900, he completed three years at Vitebsk Theological Seminary before being appointed as a teacher at the Prudy Parish School in the Grodno Diocese. A zealous Christian, he decided to serve the Church in the challenging conditions of the Turkestan Diocese, where Russian settlers had almost no churches or clergy. On December 15, 1904, he was appointed as a psalmist in the Tashkent military church, and in March of the following year, he was transferred to the Turkestan Cathedral.

On May 13, 1905, he was ordained a deacon, and the next day, he was ordained a priest for the cathedral.

On May 27, 1905, he was appointed as the priest of the Three Hierarchs Church in the village of Karabulak.

On September 1, 1906, he was transferred to the Church of St. Sophia in the city of Verny.

On September 5, 1907, he was appointed the rector of the church in the village of Ivanovskoye in the Lepsinsk District.

In 1909, he was transferred to the Pokrovsky Church in the city of Verny.

In 1910, he was moved to the church in the village of Karalinsky in the Lepsinsk District, and in 1911, to the church in the village of Lepsinskaya.

On January 18, 1913, at his own request, he was appointed as a traveling priest of the 1st Pishpek District.

In 1914, he was transferred to the village of Teploklyuchinskoye in the Przhevalsky District and later that year was appointed the rector of the Church of the Intercession in the village of Pokrovskoye, thirty-five versts from Przhevalsk on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul.

In 1916, after the village of Pokrovskoye was destroyed during a Kyrgyz uprising, Father Evstafy was appointed the rector of the church in the village of Blagoveshchenskoye in the Andijan District. That same year, he was transferred to the village of Yegoryevskoye in the Chernyaevsky District and then to the Church of the Intercession in the village of Nadezhdinskaya in the Vernensky District.

He was killed on May 5, 1918, during a confrontation between an Easter procession and a Bolshevik demonstration.

He was canonized as a saint and martyr for general church veneration in August 2000 at the Jubilee Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church.
