October 28, 2023. The Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan expresses condolences to the families and friends of miners who died in the explosion at the mine of I.A. Kostenko in Karaganda region:
"I deeply mourn the tragedy at the Kostenko mine, which resulted in deaths and injuries. Sharing the pain of the great loss that has befallen you, I offer fervent prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased, for the swift rescue of those still trapped in the mine, and for the healing of the injured. May the Creator grant you the necessary strength and emotional fortitude to endure this tragedy.
What has happened once again reminds us of how fragile human life is, and how important it is for us all to care for each other and actively ensure the health and safety of our neighbors. I sincerely express my condolences to everyone affected by this disaster and hope that the regional authorities and the Karaganda Diocese will provide all necessary assistance and support to the families of the deceased and injured.
In spirit with you, I pray that the Lord will comfort all who mourn and grant repose to the souls of the newly departed in the heavenly abodes."
On October 28, an explosion occurred at the Kostenko mine in the Karaganda region; the death toll from the accident reached 32 people. Fourteen miners remain in the mine.
October 29 has been declared a day of national mourning in Kazakhstan.
Today's accident at the mine is one of the deadliest in Kazakhstan's history.
