On November 19, 2023, the birthday of Archimandrite Peter (Goroshko), the spiritual father of the Mother of God Nativity Monastery in the Karaganda diocese, was celebrated. The head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, sent Father Peter a congratulatory message.
In the archpastoral greeting, it is stated:
"Your Reverence, dear Father Peter, you have recently crossed the 90-year milestone of your life journey, entering a new period of existence, about which the Old Testament righteous man exclaimed: 'How beautiful is the wisdom of the elderly' (Sirach 25:7). The All-Merciful Lord, to the joy of your fellow priests and numerous spiritual children, grants you the opportunity to continue your pastoral work, to proclaim peace, to preach joy, and to announce salvation (Isaiah 52:7).
You have had the honor of being a disciple and student of the venerable Sebastian of Karaganda—'servant of the Holy Trinity,' one of the last elders of Optina, a confessor of the faith, and heavenly patron of the land of Kazakhstan. With the traditions of piety and spiritual wisdom received from venerable Sebastian, you generously share with everyone who calls you a spiritual father and mentor, who comes to you for advice and consolation. Your years are filled with many fruitful labors—you have served in the challenging conditions of persecution against Orthodoxy, witnessed and participated in the revival of faith in the mining region of Kazakhstan, and developed the work of Christ’s Good News in the land of Karaganda. With wise words, fervent prayer, and the example of your life, you ignite the saving fire of Christ’s faith in people’s hearts, diligently laboring to enlighten both monastics and laity with the knowledge of God’s glory (2 Corinthians 4:6).
In recognition of your merits, His Holiness Patriarch Kirill has honored you with the high award—the right to wear a second pectoral cross. Your efforts are also noted with many other church accolades. On this special day for you, I prayerfully wish you God's mercy, robust health, and peace of soul. Many and good years to you!"
