On March 22, 2025, the earthly path of the esteemed Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Yuri Timofeyevich Novgorodov, came to an end. He reposed in the 69th year of his life. From 2005 to 2024, Yuri Novgorodov served as head of the Evangelical Lutheran community of Kazakhstan.
Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan sent his condolences to Bishop Rostislav Novgorodov, the Synod, and the faithful of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
“We all knew him as a deeply faithful, gifted, and wise man, marked by extraordinary diligence. He was an outstanding organizer of parish life and a vivid preacher of Gospel truths. The late Archbishop succeeded in establishing friendly relations with Orthodox and Catholic hierarchs and worked tirelessly to strengthen inter-Christian and interfaith cooperation. Thanks to Archbishop Yuri’s tireless efforts, the Lutheran communities of Kazakhstan steadily grew and developed. May God grant that all the good and beneficial accomplishments achieved during his two decades of leadership be preserved and multiplied. What brought us together and drew us close was our shared concern for preserving moral ideals, interfaith peace, and interethnic harmony on the soil of Kazakhstan. For his significant contribution to the development of interreligious dialogue in the Republic, the late spiritual leader of Kazakhstan’s Lutherans was awarded a high honor of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan — the Order ‘Enbek Üshin’ (For Labors),” the condolence message of the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan reads in part.
