Established on January 31, 1991.
By decision of the Holy Synod on October 5-6, 2011 (Journal No. 101), the Kokshetau Diocese was separated from the Shymkent Diocese. The Synod decided that the ruling archbishop would hold the title of Shymkent and Taraz.
By decision of the Holy Synod on March 24, 2022 (Journal No. 6), the Aktobe Diocese was separated from the Uralsk and Shymkent Dioceses (within the boundaries of the Aktobe and Kyzylorda regions). Also, taking into account the establishment of the Turkestan region in Southern Kazakhstan with its administrative center in the city of Turkestan, the Holy Synod decided that the diocesan archbishop of the Shymkent Diocese would hold the title "Shymkent and Turkestan" (Journal No. 8).
Unites parishes in the city of Shymkent, Turkestan, and Zhambyl regions of Kazakhstan. The diocese has a population of 4,252,435 people.
