Established by decision of the Holy Synod on October 5-6, 2011 (Journal No. 101) by separating from the Chimkent Diocese while keeping the city of Astana within the Astana Diocese.
The Synod decided that the ruling archbishop would hold the title of Kokshetau and Akmola.
