Established by decision of the Holy Synod on October 5-6, 2011 (Journal No. 101) by separating from the Chimkent Diocese while keeping the city of Astana within the Astana Diocese.

The Synod decided that the ruling archbishop would hold the title of Kokshetau and Akmola.

Unites parishes within the Akmola Region (excluding Tselinograd District) of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The diocese has a population of 690,542 people.
