Born on February 21, 1957, in the village of Troitsky, Uryupinsky District, Volgograd Region, in a family of military personnel.
From 1972 to 1974, he studied at SP-1 in the city of Uryupinsk. From 1975 to 1977, he served in the Armed Forces.
From 1977 to 1978, he worked in the city of Nakhodka, Primorsky Krai, in the fishing fleet.
From 1978 to 1981, he studied at the Moscow Theological Seminary. From 1981 to 1985, he studied at the Moscow Theological Academy. He defended his candidate's work on "The Phenomenon of Religious Secularism".
On November 2, 1979, he was accepted as a novice in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
On February 28, 1980, he was tonsured a monk by the abbot of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, Archimandrite Jerome (Zinoviev), with the name Barnabas.
On July 20, 1980, he was ordained a hierodeacon by Archbishop Vladimir of Dmitrov (Sabodan), and on March 14, 1982, he was ordained a hieromonk by Archbishop Vladimir (Sabodan).
On April 4, 1987, he was elevated to the rank of hegumen.
From 1988 to 1991, he served in Optina Pustyn and the St. Danilov Monastery. On January 10, 1990, he was appointed the economist of the St. Danilov Monastery with elevation to the rank of archimandrite.
On April 1, 1991, he was appointed abbot of the Nativity of the Theotokos Sanaksar Monastery in the city of Temnikov, Saransk diocese.
By the decision of the Holy Synod on October 6, 2010 (journal No. 97), he was elected Bishop of Pavlodar and Ust-Kamenogorsk.
On November 14, 2010, in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, he was consecrated a bishop by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia with a host of archpastors.
On May 6, 2022, during the Liturgy in the Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill.
