Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich Tokayev

President of the Republic of Kazakhstan

Born on May 17, 1953, in the city of Alma-Ata (now Almaty). His father, Kemel Tokayevich Tokayev (1923-1986), was a participant in the Great Patriotic War, a well-known writer, and a founder of the detective-adventure genre in Kazakh literature. His mother, Turar Shabarbayeva (1931-2000), worked at the Almaty Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.

In 1975, K.K. Tokayev graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) and completed a pre-graduation internship at the USSR Embassy in China. In 1983-1984, he interned at the Beijing Linguistic Institute. In 1992, he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.

He began his career in 1975 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR and was assigned to work at the Soviet Embassy in the Republic of Singapore. In 1979, he returned to the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1984 to 1985, he worked at the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then was assigned to the Soviet Embassy in the People's Republic of China, where he served until 1991 as Second Secretary, First Secretary, and Counselor.

In 1992, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1993, he became the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 1994, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In March 1999, he became Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In October 1999, with the consent of Parliament, he was appointed Prime Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan by the President's decree. In January 2002, he became State Secretary - Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan. From 2003 to 2007, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, actively participating in the global process of nuclear non-proliferation.

In January 2007, he was elected Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In 2008, as the speaker of the upper house of the Kazakh parliament, he was elected Vice-President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.

In March 2011, he was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the UN, Director-General of the UN Office in Geneva, and Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General at the Conference on Disarmament. He also served as Secretary-General of the Conference on Disarmament. He was elected Chairman of the Councils of Foreign Ministers of the CIS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

On October 16, 2013, he was re-elected Chairman of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On March 20, 2019, he took the oath of office as President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On June 9, 2019, he won the snap presidential elections, receiving 70.96% of the vote, and was elected President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. On June 12, 2019, in accordance with Article 42 of the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, he took the oath of office and officially assumed the duties of Head of State.

Since 2007, he has been a member of the Nur Otan party and the party's Political Council Bureau. On January 28, 2022, at the extraordinary XXI Congress of the Nur Otan party, he was unanimously elected Chairman of the party. Since April 2021, he has been the Chairman of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. Since January 2022, he has been the Chairman of the Security Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He is an Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador. He holds a Doctor of Political Science degree. He is a full member of the World Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences. He is a member of the "Council of Wise Men" of the Munich Security Conference. He is an honorary professor at Shenzhen University (PRC) and the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. He is the honorary president of the Kazakhstan Council on International Relations. He is the honorary dean of the Geneva School of Diplomacy and International Relations. According to the Russian Biographical Society, he was included in the list of laureates "Person of the Year - 2018". For 13 years, he headed the Table Tennis Federation of Kazakhstan.

He is the author of 10 books on international relations issues.

He has been awarded numerous state awards from the Republic of Kazakhstan and foreign countries, as well as commemorative medals.

He is a proponent of a healthy lifestyle. He enjoys reading fiction, political, and memoir literature.
