Metropolitan Alexander Reviewed the Preparations for the Opening of the Exhibition “The Shroud of Turin” in Astana

On July 28, 2025, in Astana, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan visited the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, where preparations are underway for the exhibition dedicated to a unique historical and archaeological monument – the Shroud of Turin.

The Head of the Metropolis was welcomed by: Archimandrite Sergiy (Karamyshev), Dean of the parishes of the capital; Hieromonk Dimitry (Baydek), Sacristan of the Cathedral of the Dormition; B. Falk, initiator and director of the exhibition and an expert of the Order of Malta in Germany; P. V. Gumenyuk, Head of the Department for Eastern European Relations of the international charitable foundation Kirche in Not (“Aid to the Church in Need”); M. B. Nelyubova, staff member of the DECR Secretariat for Inter-Christian Relations; professors and students of the Almaty Orthodox Theological Seminary.

Upon arrival, His Eminence the Metropolitan, accompanied by the organizers of the educational event, reviewed the preparations for the opening of the exhibition. The “Shroud of Turin” exhibition – which has already received international recognition – includes a life-sized replica of the Gospel relic and artifacts related to the scientific study of the object.

After viewing the exhibition, the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan gave a high assessment of the work completed and held a working meeting.

During the session, the archpastor noted that the hosting of the “Shroud of Turin” exhibition in the Republic of Kazakhstan – timed to coincide with the Eighth Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions – would serve as a significant contribution to cooperation among the traditional Christian confessions in the country.

The meeting addressed key aspects of organizing the exhibition, including its content, logistics, and educational program. It is planned that the exhibition will travel throughout Kazakhstan over the course of two years, with stops in Astana, Almaty, Karaganda, and Petropavlovsk. The main goal of the exhibition is to introduce a wide audience in Kazakhstan to one of the most well-known Christian relics – its history and the ongoing research that continues to attract the interest of numerous scientists and believers.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the Head of the Metropolis thanked all present for their efforts and wished them God’s help in this important and responsible endeavor.

The opening of the exhibition will take place on August 1 at the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation in Astana.
