September 4, 2025. The 50th anniversary of the repose in the Lord of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov †1975) of Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan – confessor of the faith and ascetic of piety of the 20th century – will be commemorated.
On this day, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan will celebrate a memorial service for the hierarch at the place of his burial in the Sophia Cathedral of the Iveron-Seraphim Monastery in Almaty.
The Primate of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan will be concelebrated by the vicars of the Astana diocese and clergy of the churches of the southern capital. The service will begin at 12:00.
The memory of Metropolitan Joseph, who endured Stalin’s camps, German captivity, harsh exile, and then, for two decades, carried out arduous episcopal service in Petropavlovsk and Alma-Ata, is reverently honored by tens of thousands of faithful throughout Kazakhstan and beyond.
