Spiritual Father of the Alma-Ata Diocese Archimandrite Ioann (Sazonov) Awarded a High Church Distinction – the Order of Saint Seraphim of Sarov

May 21, 2026. Alma-Ata. On the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, following the Divine Liturgy at the Ascension Cathedral, a ceremony was held honoring Archimandrite Ioann (Sazonov), spiritual father of the Alma-Ata Diocese, who is marking the 40th anniversary of his priestly ordination.

In fulfillment of the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan presented Archimandrite Ioann with a high church distinction – the Order of Saint Seraphim of Sarov, Second Class.

While presenting the Patriarchal award, the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan, in particular, said:

“For many years, carrying out your ministry on the blessed land of Kazakhstan, you have instilled in people a love for the moral ideals of the Gospel and called Christians to follow the Divine law. For your flock, you are a spiritual father and guide, one who is ‘publishing peace; bringing good tidings of joy; proclaiming salvation’ (Isaiah 52:7). In all circumstances of life, you strive to remain faithful to your priestly vows and pastoral duty.”

The hierarch wished the recipient peace, good health, and many years of life.

“May the All-Merciful Lord, through the prayers and intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos and through the protection of the New Martyrs and Confessors of Kazakhstan, grant you fullness of spiritual and physical strength to continue your ministry for the good of the Holy Church,” the hierarch said.

Archimandrite Ioann warmly thanked Metropolitan Alexander for the presentation of the order and asked that words of profound gratitude be conveyed to His Holiness Patriarch Kirill for the high award.
