Nighttime Divine Liturgy and Procession Held in the Diocese of Kostanay in Memory of the Royal Passion-Bearers

Nighttime Divine Liturgy and Procession Held in the Diocese of Kostanay in Memory of the Royal Passion-Bearers

July 17, 2026 – the commemoration of the Holy Royal Passion-Bearers: Emperor Nicholas, Empress Alexandra, Tsarevich Alexei, and Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, and Anastasia.

In 1891, during the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, Nicholas Alexandrovich, then heir to the throne, visited the lands that now form the Kostanay Region. The village of Presnogorkovka was one of the many settlements along the route taken by the heir to the Russian throne. There, the future Passion-Bearer Emperor Nicholas II stayed at the home of the merchant Vasily Kladenov.

With the blessing of the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan, a procession from St. Nicholas Church to the house of the merchant V. Kladenov was established in 2022 to commemorate the visit of Tsar-Passion-Bearer Nicholas II to the territory of present-day Kazakhstan.

On the night of July 16–17, with the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, temporary administrator of the Diocese of Kostanay and Rudny, Hegumen Innocent (Pomogalov), a cleric of the Cathedral of Saints Constantine and Helen in Kostanay, concelebrated a nighttime Divine Liturgy with diocesan clergy at the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, Archbishop of Myra in Lycia, in the village of Presnogorkovka.

Following the service, a procession was held from St. Nicholas Church to the house of the merchant V. Kladenov. At the place where the Passion-Bearer Emperor Nicholas II once stayed, Hegumen Innocent celebrated a moleben to the Royal Martyrs. He then congratulated those present on the feast and addressed the faithful with a sermon.

Several hundred people took part in the procession.
