On October 4, 2026, with the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, a schoolchildren’s quiz entitled “History of the Ancient World,” dedicated to ancient Roman civilization, was held at the parish of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God in Chemolgan.
The event, organized by the Commission for Educational Ministry of the Diocese of Almaty, brought together teams of pupils from seven Sunday schools in Almaty and the surrounding region.
Before the event began, A. A. Palyuk, a Kazakhstani numismatist, delivered a lecture on the monetary system of ancient Rome, which began developing on the Apennine Peninsula during the Roman Republic in the second half of the fourth century BC and subsequently spread throughout the Mediterranean.
The participants then tackled engaging problems related to numismatics, completed Russian-language exercises, constructed an ancient Roman catapult, and played themed board games.
The team from the Sunday school of the Church of the Iveron Icon of the Mother of God in the village of Boraldai, Almaty Region, was declared the winner of the quiz.
Second and third places were awarded to teams from the Sunday schools of the Church of St. Seraphim of Sarov in the village of Baikent, the Church of the Archangel Michael in Kaskelen, St. Elizabeth’s Church in the village of Koldi, the Church of Christ the Saviour and St. John the Theologian in Almaty, and the Church of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God in Chemolgan.
All participants in the history quiz received books on ancient Roman mythology and board games donated by the Almaty Diocesan Administration.
