On the evening of August 18, 2024, on the eve of the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan led the All-Night Vigil at the Ascension Cathedral in Almaty.
The Primate of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan was joined in service by the spiritual father of the Almaty Diocese, Archimandrite Ioann (Sazonov), the keyholder of the Ascension Cathedral, Head of the Metropolitan District's Public Relations Department, Protopriest Alexander Suvorov, and the cathedral clergy.
The hymns were performed by the Metropolitan District Choir (conducted by the Honored Artist of Russia, O.N. Ovchinnikov, with choirmaster V. Dudareva) and the Ascension Cathedral Choir (conducted by N. Zubrević).
During the Great Vespers, according to the Church's Typikon, a litiyá (augmented prayer) was conducted with the blessing of bread, wine, wheat, and oil.
At Matins, after the reading of the Gospel passage, Metropolitan Alexander delivered a sermon to the faithful, explaining the spiritual meaning and significance of the Transfiguration of the Savior for Orthodox Christians.
During the singing of the Canon of the Transfiguration, the faithful were anointed with blessed oil.
On the day of the feast itself, the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan will celebrate the Divine Liturgy at the Ascension Cathedral of the Southern Capital. The service will begin at 8:30 AM.
