October 21, 2024. On the eve of the commemoration day of St. Sebastian the Confessor of Karaganda, a solemn vigil was held at the Trinity-Sebastian Cathedral in the city of Karaganda.
The service was led by Archbishop Serapion of Kokshetau and Akmola, co-served by Bishop Chrysanthus of Shymkent and Turkestan, Bishop Claudian of Taldykorgan, Vicar of the Astana Diocese, and the clergy of the Karaganda Diocese.
Earlier that morning, a great Orthodox relic – the reliquary with the relics of Blessed Matrona of Moscow – was brought to the cathedral for the prayerful veneration and spiritual strengthening of the faithful.
Praying during the vigil were the Abbess Olympia (Salopeko) of the Nativity of the Theotokos Convent in Karaganda with the sisters of the monastery, staff of the Karaganda Diocesan Administration, and students of Sunday schools.
During the polyeleos, the hierarchs and clergy sang magnifications in honor of Blessed Matrona and St. Sebastian the Confessor of Karaganda.
After the reading of the Gospel, Archbishop Serapion congratulated the clergy and faithful on the commemoration of the heavenly patron of the “Miner’s Capital” and the joy of bringing the great Orthodox relic to the Karaganda Diocese. He then addressed the gathered worshippers with words of instruction.
During the singing of the canon, the faithful were anointed with blessed oil.
On the day of the discovery of the holy relics of St. Sebastian the Confessor of Karaganda, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan will lead the festive Divine Liturgy at the Trinity-Sebastian Cathedral in Karaganda. The service will begin at 9:00 AM.
The relics will remain in the Karaganda Diocese from October 21 to October 24.
