August 28, 2024. Astana. On the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, Schema-Nun Nadezhda (Timoshenko), one of the oldest nuns of the Monastery in honor of the Icon of the Mother of God "Recovery of the Deceased" in Kazakhstan's capital, passed away in the Lord at the age of 95.
Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan performed a memorial service (litia) for the newly departed handmaid of God, Schema-Nun Nadezhda, in the Feodorovsky chapel of his residence in Astana.
Schema-Nun Nadezhda (in the world, Nadezhda Ivanovna Timoshenko) was born on October 9, 1929, in Isilkul Station, Omsk Region. She grew up in a large working-class family and completed six grades of general education school. Nadezhda lived a difficult working life, courageously enduring the hardships and adversities of the Great Patriotic War and the post-war years. At the age of 18, she began working. After getting married, Nadezhda Ivanovna moved with her husband to Akmolinsk, now Astana—the capital of Kazakhstan. Her husband worked as an assistant train driver, while Nadezhda Ivanovna took on all the household responsibilities. She raised their children, and after they started school, she began working outside the home. It was during this time that she turned to God, frequently attending church services and praying at home.
In the 1970s, she actively assisted in the construction of the Alexander Nevsky Church in Akmolinsk and diligently attended church services. In 1985, after the death of her husband, Nadezhda Ivanovna began to serve in the church refectory. She was spiritually guided by the late confessor of the faith, Archimandrite Kirill (Borodin). After Father Kirill moved to Riga, she would periodically visit him there.
In 1994, she took monastic vows at the Monastery of the Icon of the Mother of God "Recovery of the Deceased," receiving the name Eusebia. On August 21, 2002, Nun Eusebia was tonsured as a nun and given the name Zosima.
On January 2, 2018, by the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, Hieromonk Modest (Drozdov), the spiritual father of the women's monastery dedicated to the "Recovery of the Deceased" icon, tonsured Nun Zosima into the Great Schema, giving her the name in honor of Saint Martyr Nadezhda.
The late Schema-Nun Nadezhda worked tirelessly in the refectory for many years, baking prosphora. She was known for her heartfelt simplicity, responsiveness, and meekness. Both monastics and laypeople found comfort in their interactions with her, always receiving spiritual support and kind advice.
