January 10–11, 2026 – Almaty. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, six Christmas Metropolitan celebrations took place at the State Academic Korean Theater.
The event was organized by the Central Sunday School at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Almaty, headed by Director G.V. Cherepanova. Active participation in preparing and conducting the children’s celebration was taken by Deacon Vladimir Alferov and Hierodeacon Athanasius (Kozel).
Before the performances began, Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, Chancellor of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District, congratulated the children, their parents, and Sunday school teachers on the Nativity of Christ.
Students of the Central Sunday School presented an engaging musical play titled “Cinderella’s Journey on Christmas Night” based on the fairy tale Cinderella by Charles Perrault. The well-known plot received a new development – the fairy-tale characters became witnesses of the events of Christ’s Nativity. The performance involved 34 actors – students of the Central Sunday School aged 5 to 18, as well as seminarians from the Almaty Orthodox Theological Seminary. The beautiful sets and costumes were made by the teachers and students of the school.
The audience included young Almaty residents and their parents, as well as large and low-income families.
After the performance, dances, round dances, and contests with fairy-tale characters were held in the theater foyer by the Christmas tree.
At the end of the celebration, all the children received gifts from the Eleos-Meirim Public Foundation (President – V.M. Kapsamun).
This year, the Christmas performances were attended by 3,000 people.
