June 6 – the celebration in honor of the appearance of the Velikoretsk Icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker.
Each year, from June 3 to 8, the All-Russian Velikoretsk Cross Procession takes place in the Vyatka Metropolitanate – a solemn procession carrying the ancient copy of the Velikoretsk Icon of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker to the banks of the Velikaya River, the site of the appearance of the wonderworking image. It is one of the largest cross processions in the Russian Orthodox Church, annually gathering tens of thousands of pilgrims.
We offer to the visitors of our website an article by Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan – one of the principal initiators of the restoration of the Velikoretsk Cross Procession in 1989.
The article was written to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the revival of the Velikoretsk Cross Procession.
