June 9, 2026. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, the monograph Administrators of the Alma-Ata Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1927–1990: Personalities in History has been published.
The author of the study is Hegumen Agafangel (Gagua), assistant to the Head of the Metropolitan District of Kazakhstan at the Moscow Representation of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan, vice-rector of the Alma-Ata Seminary, Candidate of Theology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, and professor.
The published work examines the lives, ecclesiastical ministry, scholarly activity, and spiritual legacy of the hierarchs who served in the Alma-Ata Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church from 1927 to 1990. The book reconstructs a comprehensive picture of the ministry of hierarchs in Kazakhstan within the broader context of Church–state relations in the USSR and the history of Orthodoxy in the region during this period.
The research is based on documents from ecclesiastical and state archives of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation. The volume comprises 452 pages. The book opens with an introductory address to readers by Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan.
The monograph was reviewed by: M.V. Shkarovsky, chief archivist of the Central State Archive of St. Petersburg, professor at the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, and Doctor of Historical Sciences; and S.L. Firsov, Doctor of Historical Sciences and professor at the Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia.
The study Administrators of the Alma-Ata Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church in 1927–1990: Personalities in History has been recommended for publication by the Publishing Council of the Russian Orthodox Church and approved for distribution within the Republic of Kazakhstan by the Committee for Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Culture and Information of Kazakhstan.
The publication is intended for a wide audience interested in the history of Orthodoxy in Kazakhstan during the twentieth century and in the lives of ascetics of piety and confessors of the faith.
The presentation of the monograph will take place on June 21 during the graduation ceremony of the Alma-Ata Theological Seminary.
The book will be distributed to parish libraries of churches of the Metropolitan District of Kazakhstan.
