Funeral of the Esteemed Archbishop Yuri Novgorodov of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan Held in Astana

March 24, 2025. Astana. The funeral of the esteemed Archbishop Yuri Timofeyevich Novgorodov of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Kazakhstan, who reposed in the Lord on March 22, was held at the main Lutheran spiritual, cultural, and administrative center — the Church of Christ the Savior.

With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, the Orthodox Church was represented at the funeral service by: Sacristan of the Dormition Cathedral of Astana Hieromonk Dimitry (Baydek); Sacristan of the Constantine and Helen Cathedral Archpriest Sergy Kaliyev; and Priest Sergy Pinigine.

Among those who attended the funeral service and paid their respects were: Deputy Chairman of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan A. P. Rau; Vice Minister of Information and Social Development K. Zh. Iskakov; Apostolic Nuncio to the Republic of Kazakhstan Archbishop George Panamthundil; Vicar of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Astana Bishop Athanasius Schneider; as well as the family and loved ones of the late spiritual leader of the Lutheran community of the Republic.

The funeral service was led by Bishop Rostislav Novgorodov of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kazakhstan.

Hieromonk Dimitry (Baydek) read aloud the message of condolence from the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan. In his message addressed to the relatives and close ones of the departed, Metropolitan Alexander wrote:

“We all knew him as a deeply faithful, gifted, and wise man, marked by extraordinary diligence. He was an outstanding organizer of parish life and a vivid preacher of Gospel truths. The late Archbishop succeeded in establishing friendly relations with Orthodox and Catholic hierarchs and worked tirelessly to strengthen inter-Christian and interfaith cooperation. Thanks to Archbishop Yuri’s tireless efforts, the Lutheran communities in Kazakhstan steadily grew and developed.”
