February 3, 2026 - the commemoration day of Venerable Maximus the Confessor, Venerable Maximus the Greek, and Hieromartyr Presbyter Elias (Berezovsky), who was killed for Christ in Kaskelen in 1938.
Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan celebrated the Divine Liturgy at the church dedicated to Blessed Matrona of Moscow at the Iversko-Seraphim Convent in the city of Almaty.
Concelebrating with the hierarch were: Hegumen Onisim (Tulnikov); Hieromonk Prokhor (Endovitsky), Head of the Personal Secretariat of the Head of the Metropolitan District; Hieromonk Arseny (Voloshin); Hieromonk Meletiy (Chernov); Hierodeacon Athanasius (Kozel); and Deacon Georgy Tkachenko.
Praying at the service were: the Secretary of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation and member of the Patriarchal Council for the Development of Church Singing O. N. Ovchinnikov; Abbess Lyubov (Yakushkina), Superior of the Iversko-Seraphim Convent in Almaty, together with the sisters of the monastery; staff of the Almaty Diocesan Administration; as well as members of the teaching staff and students of the Almaty Orthodox Theological Seminary.
The liturgical hymns were performed by the choir of the St Sophia Cathedral of the Iversko-Seraphim Convent under the direction of O. Usoltseva.
After the dismissal of the Liturgy, a doxology was offered to Hieromartyr Elias, Presbyter of Kaskelen, following which the hierarch delivered a sermon on the importance of venerating the New Martyrs and Confessors in the spiritual life of every believer.
