Celebration of the Day of Orthodox Book in the dioceses of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District

15 March 2026. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, the dioceses of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District held celebrations of the Day of Orthodox Book.

The feast was established at the initiative of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in December 2009 and is timed to the date of the publication in 1564 of the first printed book in Rus’ – the «Apostle» of Deacon Ivan Fedorov.

Petropavlovsk Diocese

On 15 March, a праздничное мероприятие dedicated to the Day of Orthodox Book took place at the leisure center of the All Saints Church in the city of Petropavlovsk.

Pupils of the parish Sunday school took part in the celebration.

During the meeting, the children became acquainted with the history of printing, the methods of the work of scribes, and the decoration of pages using initials and ornaments.

Workshops were organized for the participants, during which the children copied words in the Church Slavonic language, made stamps with capital letters, and decorated inscriptions with ornamental elements.

After that, an educational film about Ivan Fedorov was shown, introducing the Sunday school pupils to the development of printing in Rus’.

At the conclusion of the celebration, all the young participants received commemorative gifts.

Uralsk Diocese

On 15 March, the Day of Orthodox Book was celebrated at the Orthodox youth club «Agni Parfene» in the city of Uralsk.

The event was organized by the Department for Culture of the Uralsk and Atyrau Diocese.

The participants in the celebration were: representatives of the public organization «Center of Russian Culture», activists of the youth club «Agni Parfene», pupils of Sunday schools, and parishioners of the churches of the city of Uralsk.

During the meeting, those gathered discussed the book of Bishop Vianor of Uralsk and Atyrau «Orthodoxy in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region: history and modernity», and also became acquainted with new editions of Orthodox literature

At the conclusion of the event, the participants summed up the results of the discussions and noted the importance of Christian motifs in literary works for spiritual and cultural enlightenment.

Karaganda Diocese

On 15 March, educational events dedicated to the Day of Orthodox Book were held in the churches of the Karaganda Diocese.

At the parishes, recitation competitions and thematic lessons were organized for Sunday school pupils, during which participants became acquainted with the history of the first printer Deacon Ivan Fedorov and the features of book creation in past centuries.

Children took part in quizzes, competitions, and quests dedicated to Orthodox literature.

In a number of churches, exhibitions of old books and works for children were organized.

At the «Sobesednik» club of the Presentation Cathedral in the city of Karaganda, a discussion was held on the topic «The book absorbs the whole life», during which participants discussed the role of spiritual literature and its significance for the formation of moral and cultural values.

Kostanay Diocese

On 15 March, after the Divine Liturgy, an educational event dedicated to the Day of Orthodox Book was held in the library of the Constantine and Helen Cathedral.

The cathedral librarian E.A. Boronina told those present about the фонд епархиальной библиотеки, and also presented an exhibition of new Orthodox literature.

At the conclusion of the event, all the guests were presented with books and brochures on Orthodox teaching as a remembrance of the occasion.
