June 23, 2026. Almaty. At the St. Alexander Nevsky Chapel of the Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov) Spiritual and Cultural Center of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan celebrated a Litia for the ever-memorable Metropolitan Chrysanth (Chepil), the first Metropolitan of Vyatka and Slobodskoy, and Schema-Hegumenia Makaria (Travina), the long-serving Abbess of the Transfiguration St. Macarius of Pisma Monastery of the Kostroma Metropolia, marking the 10th anniversary of her repose.

Praying at the memorial service were: the Vicars of the Diocese of Astana — Bishop Claudian of Taldykorgan and Bishop Benjamin of Talgar; O.N. Ovchinnikov, Secretary of the Metropolitan District and Honored Cultural Figure of Russia and Kazakhstan; Archpriest Evgeny Ivanov, Rector of the Almaty Orthodox Theological Seminary and Head of the Information and Publishing Department of the Metropolitan District; Archpriest Alexander Suvorov, Dean of the Ascension Cathedral of Almaty and Head of the Metropolitan District’s Department for Public Relations; Hieromonk Dimitry (Baydek), Personal Secretary to the Head of the Metropolitan District; Hieromonk Prokhor (Yendovitsky), Head of the Metropolitan’s Secretariat; Priest Georgy Sidorov, Head of the Administrative Secretariat of the Head of the Metropolitan District; Priest Kirill Konoplev, Deputy Head of the Information and Publishing Department of the Metropolitan District; Priest Vladislav Pashkov, staff member of the Information and Publishing Department; Protodeacon Roman Golovin, Protodeacon Vladimir Syrovatsky, and employees of the diocesan administration.

The Male Choir of the Diocese of Almaty sang the hymns.

Metropolitan Alexander addressed those present with a reflection in which he gratefully recalled the labors of the ever-memorable hierarch and Mother Makaria.

At the conclusion of the Litia, the clergy and faithful sang “Memory Eternal.”

The life and labors of the ever-memorable hierarch — the first Metropolitan of the Vyatka land — are described in Metropolitan Alexander’s article “A Man of Faith and a Man of the Church.”
