Holy Synod Appoints a Vicar Bishop for the Diocese of Karaganda

July 16, 2026, Moscow – A meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church was held at the Patriarchal and Synodal Residence in the Danilov Monastery under the chairmanship of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’.

The Holy Synod resolved that His Eminence Archbishop Hypatius, formerly ruling bishop of the Diocese of Anadyr, be appointed Vicar Bishop of the Diocese of Karaganda with the title “of Satpayev” (Journal No. 50).

Archbishop Hypatius of Satpayev (secular name: Valery Yuryevich Golubev) was born on July 17, 1966, in Kuibyshev. He was baptized in 1969 at Sts. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Kuibyshev. In 1982 he graduated from Secondary School No. 96 in Kuibyshev and served in the Soviet Army from 1984 to 1986. In 1991 he graduated from the Kuibyshev Institute of Telecommunications Engineering, specializing in automatic telecommunications.

In July 1994 he entered the brotherhood of the Holy Trinity-St. Sergius Lavra. On April 5, 1996, he was tonsured a monk by the Lavra’s abbot, Archimandrite Feognost (Guzikov), receiving the name Hypatius in honor of St. Hypatius the Healer of the Kyiv Caves. In February 1997 he was transferred to the clergy of the Diocese of Novosibirsk.

He was ordained a hierodeacon on March 24, 1997, and a hieromonk on April 7, 1997, by Bishop Sergius (Sokolov) of Novosibirsk and Berdsk.

From 1996 to 2002 he studied by correspondence at the Moscow Theological Seminary, and from 2006 to 2012 at the Moscow Theological Academy. Between 1999 and 2018 he served as assistant to the rector of the episcopal metochion dedicated to the Icon of the Mother of God “Quick to Hear”. On April 5, 2018, he was released from the clergy of the Novosibirsk Metropolia, and the following day was assigned to the Diocese of Anadyr.

By decision of the Holy Synod on July 14, 2018 (Journal No. 50), he was elected Bishop of Anadyr and Chukotka. On July 19, 2018, he was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite by Metropolitan Barsanuphius of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, Chancellor of the Moscow Patriarchate. He was named bishop on August 20, 2018, following the All-Night Vigil at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Solovetsky Monastery, and consecrated to the episcopate on August 21 during the Divine Liturgy celebrated by His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’.

By Patriarchal decree dated August 29, 2018, he was appointed rector of the Church of the Sign Icon of the Mother of God in the Kuntsevo district of Moscow.

On March 17, 2019, during the Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow, Patriarch Kirill elevated him to the rank of Archbishop.
