August 27, 2026. Alma-Ata. On the eve of the Feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan celebrated the All-Night Vigil at the Ascension Cathedral.

During the service at the principal church of the Southern Capital, the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan was joined by Archimandrite Ioann (Sazonov), Father Confessor of the Alma-Ata Diocese; Archpriest Alexander Suvorov, Sacristan of the Ascension Cathedral and Head of the Metropolitan District’s Department for Public Relations; and the cathedral clergy.

The liturgical hymns were performed by the Choir of the Metropolitan District (Choirmaster – O.N. Ovchinnikov, Honored Worker of Kazakhstan and Honored Art Worker of Russia; Assistant Choirmaster – V. Dudareva) and the Choir of the Ascension Cathedral (Choirmaster – E. Boguslavets).

At Great Vespers, in accordance with the Church Typikon, the Litia (fervent supplication) was celebrated with the blessing of bread, wine, wheat and oil.

At Matins, during the singing of the festal troparion, “In giving birth thou didst preserve thy virginity,” the shroud bearing an image of the Dormition of the Mother of God was carried from the altar into the center of the cathedral and placed upon a flower-adorned tomb.

Following the reading of the Gospel passage, Metropolitan Alexander congratulated those gathered on the approaching feast and anointed the clergy and faithful with blessed oil.

On the feast day itself, the Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan will celebrate the Divine Liturgy at the Dormition Cathedral in Astana. The Dormition of the Mother of God is the patronal feast of the principal cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan. The Liturgy will begin at 9:00 a.m.
