March 30, 2025. Kostanay. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, the regional stage of the II All-Kazakhstan Church Readers’ Contest “In the Beginning Was the Word…” took place at the Sunday school of the Church of St. Nicholas.
The event was timed to coincide with the celebration of the Day of Orthodox Book and the 225th anniversary of the birth of the first hierarch of the land of Kazakhstan – Archbishop Sophonius (Sokolsky).
The jury, chaired by Protopriest Vitaly Gutsan, sacristan of the Church of St. Nicholas, included Priest Andrey Krutin, Dean of the Kostanay Deanery, and Ludmila Litovka, psalm reader of the same parish.
Participants in the regional stage included church readers, psalm readers, students of Sunday schools from local parishes, active members of the Orthodox youth movement of Kostanay, as well as psalm readers from the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in the city of Tobyl.
During the competition, participants demonstrated their proficiency in reading morning and evening prayers, the Gospel and Epistle readings, the Horologion, the Psalter, liturgical texts, as well as their ability to translate fragments of liturgical services from Church Slavonic into Russian.
As part of the event, a presentation was given about the life and ministry of Archbishop Sophonius (Sokolsky).
At the end of the contest, each reader received a commemorative certificate of participation.
The final stage of the II All-Kazakhstan Church Readers’ Contest will be held on April 27 as part of the Paschal Festival on the grounds of the Iveron–Seraphim Convent in Almaty.
