June 17, 2025. Almaty. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, a regular meeting of the open historical society of the Metropolis of Kazakhstan was held in the conference hall of the spiritual and cultural center named after Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov).
The meeting, chaired by Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, Chancellor of the Orthodox Church in Kazakhstan, was attended by: Protopriest Alexander Gaichenya, sacristan of the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ in the Southern Capital and head of the Church History Department of the Almaty Seminary; Protopriest Vadim Alekseev, rector of the Church of Righteous John of Kronstadt in Alatau; M. Ivashko, secretary of the Almaty Diocese’s canonization commission; V.S. Shikhotov, ataman of the Semirechye Cossack Union and member of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan; Local historians T.A. Klochкова, L. Korotchenko, and E.A. Morozova; and Orthodox believers of the Southern Capital.
Bishop Gennady opened the session with a greeting. He announced the meeting’s agenda and delivered a report dedicated to the 65th anniversary of the visit of renowned poet Joseph Brodsky to Almaty.
Local historian T.A. Klochkova presented a report on the history of the acquisition of the Kozelshchansk Icon of the Mother of God and its transfer to St. Nicholas Cathedral of the Southern Capital in 1947.
Protopriest Alexander Gaichenya shared information about the life of Archbishop Tikhon (Sharapov) and his efforts to preserve the Patriarchal Church.
After the presentations, participants exchanged views on a wide range of issues related to regional history.
In conclusion, Bishop Gennady thanked the attendees for their participation and expressed hope for continued fruitful cooperation.
