Graduation Ceremony Held for Evening Theological Courses at the Central Sunday School in Almaty

June 20, 2025. Almaty. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, the final class of the 2024–2025 academic year was held within the framework of the evening theological courses at the Central Sunday School of the St. Nicholas Cathedral.

The event was headed by Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, Chancellor of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan.

Present at the gathering were: Director of the Central Sunday School G.V. Cherepanova; instructors Hierodeacon Athanasius (Kozel), Deacon Andrey Plakhuta, L.M. Gizatullina, V.N. Popov, and L.Z. Alexandrovich.

The bishop addressed the audience with a welcoming speech, after which he delivered a lecture on the poetry of the Great Patriotic War and answered questions from the audience.

On behalf of those present, G.V. Cherepanova expressed words of gratitude to His Grace.

The graduates, in turn, thanked Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, Protopriest Valery Zakharov, rector of the St. Nicholas Cathedral, and the teaching staff for their efforts, wishing them strong health and success in their challenging work.

The meeting concluded with a festive tea gathering.

With the blessing of Archbishop Alexis of Astana and Almaty (now Metropolitan of Tula and Yefremov), two-year theological courses for all interested persons have been held at the Central Sunday School since 2001. Classes are conducted twice a week – on Wednesdays and Fridays. The primary goal of the program is to provide systematic instruction in the foundations of Orthodox doctrine.
