October 26, 2025. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, a geography Olympiad for students of Sunday schools of the Almaty Diocese was held at the Church of St. Vladimir in the town of Chemolgan.
Before the competition, a guest lecture on North America was delivered by Galina Yevgrafovna Golovina, author of Kazakhstani school textbooks on geography and world studies. Addressing the young audience, she spoke about the history of the continent’s discovery and exploration, its relief, mineral resources, climate, inland waters, natural zones, flora and fauna, as well as the peoples who inhabited the continent in the pre-Columbian era.
Following the lecture, participants answered questions testing their knowledge of the physical geography of North America.
The winners of the Olympiad were Vasilisa Murayeva and Kira Malygina, students of the Sunday School of the Church of the Apostle John the Theologian in Almaty, who achieved the highest scores.
All participants received board games as gifts, presented by the Almaty Diocesan Administration.
