May 1, 2026. An article by Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan has been published in the academic journal “Theological Herald of the Smolensk Orthodox Theological Seminary,” посвященная the study of the intellectual environment of Russian theological schools of the first quarter of the 19th century, in which the personality of Archbishop Sophronius (Sokolsky), the first Turkestan hierarch, was formed.

Title of the publication: “The Intellectual Environment of Russian Theological Schools of the First Quarter of the 19th Century in the Context of the Biography of Archbishop Sophronius (Sokolsky), the First Turkestan Hierarch.”

The article reconstructs, using the example of the formation of the personality of Archbishop Sophronius (Sokolsky) (1800–1877), hierarch of the Turkestan Diocese, the intellectual environment of Russian theological schools of the first quarter of the 19th century. Based on a wide range of archival sources and memoir literature, the mechanisms of transmission of theological, pedagogical, and ideological traditions from the metropolitan academic centers to provincial seminaries are analyzed. Particular attention is given to the characterization of the system of theological education after the reform of 1808–1814, the personnel composition and pedagogical approaches of the instructors of the Tver Theological Seminary (1817–1823), and the atmosphere of the Saint Petersburg Theological Academy (1823–1827). The article identifies the influence of key figures of the “Filaret” school – Archimandrite Afanasy (Protopopov), Professors G.P. Pavsky and I.S. Kochetov, Inspector Innocent (Borisov), Rectors Bishop Gregory (Postnikov) and Archimandrite John (Dobrozrakov) – on the formation of the future hierarch. It is concluded that the rigorous educational system, paradoxically combining features of strict discipline and high intellectualism, formed a unique combination of qualities that enabled the son of a rural priest to become an outstanding hierarch and missionary.

The journal “Theological Herald of the Smolensk Orthodox Theological Seminary” is included in the list of peer-reviewed academic publications in which the main results of scientific research, as well as dissertation results for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences and Doctor of Church History, must be published (Higher Attestation Commission list).
