May 22, 2026. Alma-Ata. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, a concert dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Central Sunday School took place at the State Academic Korean Theatre.
The anniversary concert was prepared by the teachers and pupils of the Central Sunday School.
Among those in attendance were: Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, Chancellor of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District; Hieromonk Dimitry (Baidek), Secretary to the Head of the Metropolitan District; Archpriest Alexander Suvorov, dean of the Ascension Cathedral of Alma-Ata and Head of the Metropolitan District Department for Public Relations; Hegumen Nazary (Markov), abbot of the Savior-Silouan Issyk Hermitage; Archpriest Vitaly Rybakov, Head of the Center for the Protection of Motherhood and Childhood of the Ryazan Diocese; Priest Roman Kravchenko, cleric of St. Vladimir Church in Alma-Ata; L.E. Goricheva, Head of the Culture Department of the Metropolitan District and Honored Cultural Worker of the Russian Federation; teachers and students of parish schools and parishioners of churches of the Southern Capital.
Graduates of the Central Sunday School from various years were invited to the celebration, among them clergy, monastics, church workers, educators, and figures in education and culture.
During the concert program, performances were given by the choir of St. Nicholas Cathedral under the direction of O. Berekesheva and the men’s choir of the Alma-Ata Diocese under the direction of Deacon Alexander Piven.
Pupils of the Central Sunday School presented vocal and choreographic performances entitled The War Ended at Pascha and Rio Rita Dance; a production set to the music of Antonio Vivaldi and the poetry of A.S. Pushkin, The Seasons; Russian folk dances; the songs Thy Temple, O Lord, Is in the Heavens… based on the poetry of N. Gumilev, Lilies of the Valley based on the poetry of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov), as well as musical compositions dedicated to anniversary dates.
At the conclusion of the event, S.O. Vlasova, Attaché of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation, read a congratulatory address from D.A. Turayev, Consul General of Russia in Alma-Ata.
Thereafter, Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, Chancellor of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District, thanked the performers for their labors and congratulated all those present on the occasion of the celebration.
With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, church awards were bestowed upon members of the staff of the Central Sunday School, including choreographer M.V. Privalova and teachers Deacon Vladimir Alferov, V.N. Popov, L.Z. Alexandrovich, O.N. Miroshnikova, and others.
In recognition of her labors for the benefit of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan and in connection with this significant anniversary, the school’s director, G.V. Cherepanova, was awarded the Order of St. Sophronius (Sokolsky), Archbishop of Turkestan and Tashkent, Enlightener of Semirechye.
Following the concert, a festive tea gathering took place at the premises of the Central Sunday School.
