June 6, 2026. Almaty. With the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, a festival dedicated to the Days of Slavic Literacy and Culture took place at St. Nicholas Cathedral. The event was held with the support of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in the Southern Capital.
Beginning on May 24, the feast of Saints Cyril and Methodius, Equal-to-the-Apostles, educational events are traditionally held throughout the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District, aimed at preserving and promoting the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Slavic peoples and fostering interconfessional and interethnic dialogue through classical literature, music, and poetry.
In the morning, teachers and students of the Central Sunday School, led by its director, recipient of the Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov) Award G.V. Cherepanova, participated in the Divine Liturgy at St. Nicholas Cathedral. Afterwards, a large concert took place in the Church Assembly Hall, prepared by teachers M.V. Privalova and Deacon Vladimir Alferov.
The celebration was opened by Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, Managing Director of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District and member of the Union of Writers of Moscow.
Among those in attendance were: A.V. Turaeva, spouse of the Russian Consul General; L.E. Goricheva, Head of the Culture Department of the Metropolitan District and Honored Cultural Worker; N.G. Sorokina, Russian Consul in Almaty; V.S. Shikhotov, Ataman of the Republican Public Association “Union of the Cossacks of Semirechye,” Chairman of the Almaty City Branch of the Association of Russian, Slavic, and Cossack Organizations of Kazakhstan, and member of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan.
Guests enjoyed a variety of musical performances, including a production of The Seasons based on the music of Antonio Vivaldi and poetry by A.S. Pushkin, Russian folk dances, and the song “Thy Temple, O Lord, in the Heavens…” set to the poetry of N. Gumilev. Students also recited poems by Russian poets A.S. Pushkin and N.M. Rubtsov.
The pupils of the school presented the premiere of a well-known fairy tale based on K.I. Chukovsky’s The Fly Tsokotukha.
Following the concert, teachers of the Central Sunday School held workshops for children on Church Slavonic language, handicrafts, and chalk drawing on the cathedral grounds.
