17 April 2026. Astana. A meeting between Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan and the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Russia to Kazakhstan, Alexei Nikolayevich Borodavkin, took place at the working residence of the Head of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District.
Also present at the meeting was the dean of the capital’s parishes, Archimandrite Sergius (Karamyshev).
Metropolitan Alexander and Alexei Nikolayevich exchanged Paschal greetings and congratulations on the feast of the Bright Resurrection of Christ.
The archpastor informed the ambassador about the life of the Metropolitan District and the cultural, spiritual, and educational events held in the dioceses of Astana and Alma-Ata as part of the celebration of the principal Orthodox feast.
One of the topics discussed was the opening in the Southern Capital of a house-museum dedicated to the confessor of faith and piety, Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov) of Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan. Visitors to the memorial house will be able to see liturgical vestments and personal belongings of the confessor, church vessels and old books, diary notes and akathists written by the archpastor, as well as rare photographs and documents.
The metropolitan also informed his guest about the upcoming commemoration in Karaganda of the 60th anniversary of the repose of Venerable Confessor Sebastian of Karaganda – the last elder of Optina and the heavenly patron of Kazakhstan.
The hierarch shared impressions of his participation in the opening of the Consulate General of the Republic of Belarus in Alma-Ata and his meeting with the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs M.V. Ryzhenkov.
Alexei Nikolayevich, in turn, told Metropolitan Alexander about the visit to Kazakhstan of the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation M.V. Mishustin, who took part in a meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council and also met with President K.-J.K. Tokayev.
During the conversation, a wide range of issues of mutual interest was discussed.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Head of the Metropolitan District and the Russian ambassador once again exchanged Paschal good wishes.
The meeting took place in a friendly atmosphere.
