Archbishop Sebastian of Karaganda and Shakhtinsk and Archbishop Hypatius of Satpayev Meet with Ulytau Region Akim E.B. Baiken

August 8, 2026. Zhezkazgan. A meeting between Archbishop Sebastian of Karaganda and Shakhtinsk and Akim of the Ulytau Region Eset Berikovich Baiken took place at the regional akimat.

At the beginning of the meeting, the ruling hierarch of the Karaganda Diocese introduced his vicar, Archbishop Hypatius of Satpayev, who was appointed to serve in Kazakhstan by the decision of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Rus’ and the Holy Synod on July 16 of this year.

The meeting was attended by: Archpriest Dimitry Patrikeyev, Secretary of the Diocesan Administration; B.U. Zhailaubayev, Deputy Akim of the Region; D.R. Tulegenov Dulat, Head of the Department for Religious Affairs.

Archbishop Sebastian conveyed to E.B. Baiken words of good wishes from Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan.

During the conversation, the participants discussed issues of interaction and cooperation between the Karaganda Diocese and the regional authorities.

Archbishop Hypatius told the Akim about his life and archpastoral ministry in Chukotka. In turn, the head of the region informed the hierarchs about the implementation of the comprehensive plan for the socio-economic development of one of the Republic’s youngest regions, established by decree of President K.-Zh.K. Tokayev on June 8, 2022.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Archbishop Sebastian presented the Akim with a book about Venerable Sebastian of Karaganda and the churches of Karaganda. In turn, Eset Berikovich presented Vladyka with a collection of works by the great Kazakh thinker Abai Kunanbayev and a book dedicated to the outstanding Kazakh geologist and public figure Kanysh Satpayev.
