In 1871, the Turkestan Diocese was established with its center in the city of Verny (now Almaty). In 1916, a separate Verny Vicariate was created from it.
On June 5, 1945, the Almaty and Kazakhstan Diocese was formed, which was transformed on January 31, 1991, into three independent dioceses: Almaty-Semipalatinsk, Ural-Guryev, and Chimkent-Akmola.
In 1999, considering the capital status of the city of Astana, the Almaty-Semipalatinsk Diocese was renamed the Astana and Almaty Diocese.
Currently, the diocese unites parishes and monasteries in the cities of Astana and Almaty, as well as the Almaty region.
The boundaries of the diocese coincide with the territory of the Almaty region, with the diocesan center in Almaty.
