14 April 2026. Alma-Ata. Following the Paschal Divine Liturgy at the Sophia Cathedral of the Iveron-Seraphim Women’s Monastery in the Southern Capital, the opening took place of a house-museum dedicated to the confessor of faith and piety, Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov) of Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan.
The opening ceremony of the memorial house was led by Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan.
The event was timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the blessed hierarch-elder’s repose in the Lord.
The museum is located in the restored building that housed the Alma-Ata Diocesan Administration during the 1950s–1980s. It was in this house that the outstanding hierarch, confessor of the faith, and ascetic of piety, Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov), labored while heading the Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan Diocese from 1960 to 1975. By the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Astana and Kazakhstan, a museum was established in the renovated building.
Among those attending the opening were: vicars of the Astana Diocese – Bishop Gennady of Kaskelen, Administrator of the Kazakhstan Metropolitan District, and Bishop Klavdian of Taldykorgan; Archpriest Valery Zakharov, Dean of the churches of the Southern Capital and rector of St. Nicholas Cathedral; rectors, clergy, and faithful from the churches of the Southern Capital; Abbess Lyubov (Yakushkina), superior of the Iveron-Seraphim Women’s Monastery of Alma-Ata, with the sisters of the monastery; staff of the Alma-Ata Diocesan Administration; and professors and students of the Alma-Ata Theological Seminary.
Opening the event, the Head of the Metropolitan District said in particular:
“Today, on Bright Tuesday, when the Church on earth and in heaven sings praise to Christ the Giver of Life, risen from the dead, and glorifies the wonderworking Iveron Icon of the Queen of Heaven, we become participants in a joyful event – in Alma-Ata, the Southern Capital of our country, the house-museum of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov) is being opened.
With the support of benefactors and thanks to the participation of many concerned people, the historic building of the Alma-Ata Diocesan Administration has been restored. For fifteen years – from 1960 to 1975 – this house served as the working residence of Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov), a courageous confessor of the faith and ascetic of piety.
Interest in the life of Vladyka Joseph is testimony to our deep respect for the course of our national history and the history of our Mother Church, for the very life of this holy elder-hierarch is inseparable from the destiny of the long-suffering Orthodox people of our land.
The unique exhibits, gathered through the diligence of those devoted to the memory of the ever-memorable hierarch, will help visitors absorb the atmosphere of genuine kindness and love for humanity that surrounded Vladyka Joseph, sense his human humility and simplicity, and behold his ardent love for God and for people.
A visit to the memorial house of Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov) is far more than simply becoming acquainted with Church history during the tragic years of the twentieth century. Here, within these walls, there will take place a profound encounter with the ever-memorable righteous man, clairvoyant elder, and wonderworker. Everyone who crosses this threshold will have the opportunity to commune prayerfully with the holy elder-hierarch and to experience his spiritual support and help.”
The Head of the Orthodox Church of Kazakhstan then sprinkled holy water upon the memorial plaque installed at the museum entrance.
After this, a tour for those gathered was conducted by Priest Georgy Sidorov, head of the Administrative Secretariat of the Head of the Metropolitan District and one of the principal organizers of the museum exhibition.
Among the exhibits are liturgical vestments and personal belongings of the confessor of the faith, church vessels and antique books, diary notes and akathists handwritten by Metropolitan Joseph himself, as well as rare photographs and documents.
The interiors of the memorial house are adorned with icons especially venerated by the righteous archpastor: the Belynichi Icon of the Queen of Heaven, an icon of Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, an image of the righteous Symeon of Verkhoturye, and his personal cell icon of the Iveron Most Holy Theotokos.
Through the labors of those who arranged the exhibition, the working study of Metropolitan Joseph (Chernov), which also served as his prayer cell, has been recreated.
The Head of the Metropolitan District noted that the unique exhibits gathered in the house-museum will help visitors immerse themselves in the atmosphere of genuine kindness and love for humanity that surrounded Vladyka Joseph, feel his human modesty and simplicity, and see his ardent love for the Church of Christ.
His Eminence made the first entry in the museum’s book of honored guests. Thereafter, all participants in the opening left their comments and good wishes in it.
The event concluded with a group photograph.
